The current chairman of the department of ophthalmology has been promoted to an Associate Professor. Prof Stephen Gichuhi has a PHD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). He has published widely with over 70 publications in various journals.

The 2023 simulated cataract surgery training will take place at the department of ophthalmology, University of Nairobi. The two weeks training is currently targeting the 2nd year students Masters of Ophthalmology students before they start their real life training. The aim of the training is to enable the students have acquired enough surgical skills using artificial eyes before they can attempt surgery in real patients

Four immediate former students from the department of Ophthalmology graduated with the Masters of Medicine Degree in ophthalmology. They are:
