Prof HS Adala was the pioneer graduate from the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Nairobi. After graduating from the university in 1980, he joined the department as a lecturer. He later became the chairman of the department until his retirement. During his tenure as a chairman, the department grew and became a WHO regional training center for Sub- Saharan Africa. This saw an influx of international trainees to the department who later went and started their own training centers in their home countries.
