Ophthalmology training in the University of Nairobi started in 1978. Since then, more than 160 ophthalmologist from over 20 countries have been trained.
Ophthalmology training in the University of Nairobi started in 1978. Since then, more than 160 ophthalmologist from over 20 countries have been trained. The key achievements include:
1. Promotion to Independent department in 1978
2. Department selected as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness in May 1991.
3. Collaborations in training between University of Nairobi and Munich University since 1978 to date.
4. Training for the region and beyond; The department has trained ophthalmologists from more than 20 African countries and 3 countries outside Africa
5. Research and innovation: the department has participated in many publications of research done by both staff and students
6. Innovative Skills lab and wet lab: The department has an innovative skills lab where postgraduate students practice on model eyes and animal eyes before live surgery.
7. University eye clinic: The department runs a well equipped University eye clinic in addition to running the Kenya National Hospital Eye Clinic.
