Dr Stephen Gichuhi graduated with  a  PhD from  the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine on 6th March 2017. His thesis was on “The Epidemiology and Management of Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia (OSSN) in Kenya”.

The PhD project consisted of the following

  • 3 systematic reviews on

   i) the epidemiology of OSSN in Africa

   ii) the pathophysiology of OSSN

   iii) a Cochrane review on the interventions for OSSN in HIV-infected individuals

  • 6 clinical studies:

 (i) clinical assessment of a series of patients with conjunctival lesions to describe OSSN to determine how      OSSN may differ clinically from benign lesions

 (ii) evaluation of vital staining with Toluidine Blue (ToB) for making the diagnosis of OSSN

 (iii) development of a diagnostic algorithm based on clinical features and vital staining

 (iv) a case-control study to investigate risk factors that may contribute to the development of OSSN

 (v) assessment of referral pathway and treatment delay for patients with OSSN

 (vi) a randomised placebo-controlled trial of 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) chemotherapy eyedrops given after surgery to investigate if this can reduce the recurrence of the lesions
